Why your baby’s eczema isn’t just about food — & what to do instead

Why your baby’s eczema isn’t just about food — & what to do instead

Eczema can be incredibly tough — for your little one and for you.
The dry, itchy skin. The endless Googling. The conflicting advice about cutting dairy, gluten, eggs (or...everything).

It’s exhausting.

And if you’ve been told, "it’s just something babies grow out of," or handed yet another steroid cream without getting to the root cause, you’re not alone.

Here’s the truth:
Just because eczema is common doesn't mean it’s normal. And it’s not just about food.

Let’s dig into what’s really going on — and how you can gently support your little one from the inside out.

The gut–skin connection (and why it matters)

Research shows that babies with eczema often have differences in their gut microbiome — the delicate community of bacteria that plays a huge role in their developing immune system.
When the gut is imbalanced (whether from antibiotics, birth factors, genetics, or diet), it can make the immune system more reactive — and that can show up on the skin.

In short:

  • Eczema is often a sign of immune system and gut immaturity.

  • Food can be a trigger — but it's rarely the root cause.

  • Healing starts with strengthening the gut and calming the immune response.

Should you cut out dairy (or gluten, or eggs)?

Maybe. But maybe not.

Here’s the thing:

Removing major foods without a proper plan can create more problems — like nutritional gaps, further gut stress, or unnecessary restrictions that make weaning way harder than it needs to be.

My approach?
✔️ First, look at the big picture (gut health, immune support, environmental triggers)
✔️ Then, consider gentle food introductions — not knee-jerk eliminations
✔️ Only cut foods if there’s clear evidence it’s helping, not because you’re desperate

Gentle steps you can take today

Support the gut and immune system:

  • Breastmilk (if available)

  • Probiotic-rich foods

  • Bone broth, liver, gelatin, collagen

Support the skin barrier:
Topical treatments can’t “fix” eczema on their own — but they can make a real difference in managing discomfort while we work on the deeper causes.

  • Limit hot baths (keep it short and lukewarm)

  • Choose gentle, natural skin supports.
One of my favourites? The Bio-First Natural Cream — (use discount code: MOTHERNURTURED — its a beautiful, natural product that soothes itchiness and helps restore the skin barrier without harsh chemicals.

Be mindful with allergen introductions:
Introducing foods like egg, peanut, and dairy early (in a safe, supported way) can actually reduce the risk of developing allergies — especially when eczema is in the picture.

(If you’re not sure where to start, my Allergen Introduction eBook walks you through it gently, step-by-step.)
